The Discipleship Pathway

Our Discipleship Pathway helps us think through what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and how we grow as his disciples. Here’s a very brief version of the Pathway: To be a disciple is to be apprenticed to a teacher. We, as Christians, are learning a faithful way of life and its attitudes and practices. Our lives are being shaped to respond to the call of God and his kingdom. God’s purposes need to become the fundamental organization and direction of our lives together, defining our purpose and our actions. Together we are becoming followers of Jesus by:

1)  Loving God: Responding to God’s Love Known in Christ
We show God our love by worshipping, studying the Scriptures, practicing the directives in the Scriptures, praying, and servicing—in community and individually. Through our love of God, our fellowship with Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we embrace and support one another in joy and pain.
Who we are:  Called by God to a new life of faithfulness, hope, and love, saved by Jesus from sin and death. (Eph 2: 3-7)
What we do: Pursue our love for God via disciplines, worshipping, preaching, studying, and teaching, all grounded in the Scripture. (Acts 2:42)

2) Growing Together: Remade together with God’s family in becoming disciples and making disciples, led and transformed by the Holy Spirit
Because we are now children and heirs of God, we are to use His gifting for the building up of His body, the body of Christ growing together in love.
Who we are: Adopted into God’s family, maturing as his children. (Rom 8: 14-17)
What we do: Grow into the body together as members exercise His gifts among us for the advancement of the Kingdom. (Eph 4: 11-16)

3) Going as Servants: Repurposed for Jesus’s Work in the World
We are a new creation in Christ, a body created for good works which are to be our way of life. New creation involves works of love, mercy, care, the pursuit of justice, and witnessing to the wider world.
Who we are: A new creation with a divine mission. (2 Cor 5: 17,20)
What we do: Love and serve together, pursuing mercy, work, worship, community, justice, and witness. (Eph 2: 10)
